Basement - WIRED - Album Of The Year Edition Basement
When I found out we were writing about our albums of the year, I knew it had to be this one. I’ve been a Basement fan for as long as I can remember, and my copies of I Wish I Could Stay Here and Colourmeinkindness have practically moulded to my record player. Eight years after their last full-length, the Ipswich five-piece are back with WIRED, and it’s better than I’d hoped.
John Congleton’s raw production lets the heavy, distorted guitars hit hard and gives the melodic passages room to breathe. Andrew Fisher’s vocals are as unmistakable as ever, and lyrics about nostalgia, relationships, regret and growing up hit close to home.
The sound sits between their familiar grunge and a more melodic, indie direction. “Sever” and “Deadweight” deliver the punch, while “Broken By Design” and “Longshot” change gear and still sound like Basement.
I first saw them in Carlisle in 2016, an angry, slightly immature teenager hanging on every word. Almost a decade later, WIRED gives me that same connection. Growing up alongside a band and hearing their music mature with you is a special thing.
